VisualPolitik has released a slick, confident video asking us to believe that Pedro Sánchez is Europe’s moral compass, that 5% of GDP on defense is exorbitant, that China and Spain are “principled countries” on the right side of history, and that the real problem with the Atlantic Alliance is an American president too crass to keep. The video is well-produced. It is also, in almost every significant respect, wrong.

Before we engage the substance, the audience deserves to know something that the video itself never bothers to disclose something which, once you know it, changes the complexion of every other argument in the film.

Wij van WC-Eend Raden WC-Eend Aan

There is a Dutch saying that fits this video more precisely than any English expression I know. “Wij van WC-Eend raden WC-Eend aan.” It comes from an old Dutch television commercial for a toilet cleaner, in which the supposedly neutral expert endorsing the product turned out to work for the company that made it. The phrase has since become shorthand in the Netherlands for exactly this kind of sleight of hand someone presenting themselves as an impartial authority while quietly having a dog in the fight.

VisualPolitik is Spanish.

It was founded by three Spaniards Enrique Fonseca, Alberto Rodríguez Fernández-Castaño, and Enrique Couto Bueno. The original flagship Spanish-language channel is hosted by Alejandro Legarda Carreño and operated out of Spain. YouTube’s own country-of-origin field for the channel lists it, plainly, as Spain. The English-language spinoff the one you just watched uses a British-accented presenter (first Simon Whistler, now Grant Gallacher), but the scripts, the framing, the choice of heroes and villains, and the editorial direction are all produced in Spain by Spaniards.

So when you are sat in front of a video that tells you in polished English, with a British voice, with the cosmopolitan production values of a supposedly neutral geopolitical channel that the Spanish prime minister is the moral conscience of Europe, that he is courageously standing up to a deranged American president, that his refusal to pay NATO’s defense bill is principled rather than freeloading, that the Spanish pivot to Beijing is a heroic stand for multilateralism rather than a cornered politician running to a tyrant, you are not watching international political analysis.

You are watching a Spanish media operation defending the Spanish government, dressed in English for global export to audiences who would never swallow the message quite so readily if it came directly from Madrid’s official press office.

Wij van WC-Eend raden WC-Eend aan. We from the toilet cleaner recommend the toilet cleaner. And the neutral expert in the lab coat is, as it always turns out, on the payroll.

This does not mean every factual claim in the video is false. It does mean the framing, the omissions, the casting of heroes and villains, and the things the camera refuses to point at are all coming from a team with a very particular dog in a very particular fight a Spanish dog, in a Spanish fight, pretending to narrate from nowhere.

Always check who is holding the camera before you trust what the camera shows you. With that established, let us look at what the camera refuses to point at.

The Brother and the Mass Murderer

Your brother is eccentric. He posts tacky memes. He says rude things on social media. He embarrasses you at family dinners. He once posted a picture of himself as Jesus Christ, which let me say this clearly, as a Christian is tasteless, self-aggrandizing, and for an orthodox believer comes perilously close to blasphemy. Fine. He is your eccentric brother.

So you decide to hire a mass murderer to protect you from him.

That is the moral logic of this video. Because Trump posts crass content and threatens tariffs, Spain is to be celebrated for running into the arms of Xi Jinping the man running the largest mass-detention apparatus on the planet, the leader of the state that the independent China Tribunal in London, chaired by the prosecutor who tried Milošević, concluded beyond reasonable doubt is forcibly harvesting organs from living prisoners of conscience. As you read this paragraph.

Eccentric is not evil. Rude is not murderous. A crass meme is not a Uyghur camp. A trade threat is not a million Tibetan children ripped from their families into state boarding schools to be Sinicized out of their own language and faith right now, today, while you watch YouTube.

And let us be very clear about the other thing the video wants you to forget: whose protection put Europe into existence in the first place. The continent the video is filmed on, the NATO umbrella Sánchez says is too expensive, the freedom VisualPolitik enjoys to make videos at all; all of it exists because America bled for it at Normandy, paid for it with the Marshall Plan, and carried the Cold War on its back for forty years at four to nine percent of GDP. Europe did not build post-war Europe. America did. That is a historical fact, not an opinion.

The eccentric brother built the house. The mass murderer is being invited over for dinner to spite him. And VisualPolitik calls this principled.

Who Is This “Principled” Sánchez, Actually?

The video calls him a cat that always lands on his feet. That is accurate. It is not, however, a compliment. Cats land on their feet because they are slippery and self-preserving, not because they are righteous.

Here is what the Spanish production team declined to show you about the Spanish prime minister they are holding up as Europe’s moral standard-bearer.

On April 14, 2026 the same day he was in Beijing being praised by Xi Jinping as standing on the right side of history a Spanish judge formally charged his wife, Begoña Gómez, with four crimes: embezzlement, influence peddling, business corruption, and misappropriation of public funds. A two-year investigation. Jury trial pending. The judge presiding over the case wrote that behavior at the Moncloa palace, the Spanish prime minister’s official residence, “seems more in keeping with that of absolutist regimes.” That is a Spanish judge describing Sánchez’s government. Not Trump. Not Vox. A Spanish judge.

His brother, David Sánchez, is under indictment for influence peddling and heads to trial this year accused of receiving a bespoke government job created for him when his older brother led the Socialist party.

His hand-picked Attorney General, Álvaro García Ortiz, was criminally convicted by Spain’s Supreme Court in November 2025 the first sitting Attorney General convicted in Spanish democratic history for leaking confidential material to smear the partner of an opposition leader. Sánchez publicly defended him to the final day, attacked the judges investigating him, and declared him “innocent” just twelve days before the verdict.

His former Transport Minister and Socialist Party number three, José Luis Ábalos the man widely credited with helping propel Sánchez to power in 2018 is on trial right now, accused of pocketing roughly four hundred thousand euros in bribes from COVID-era mask contracts. Investigators recovered audio recordings in which the men used codewords for cash: five-hundred-euro notes were called “txistorras,” two-hundreds were “suns,” hundreds were “lettuces.” His adviser Koldo García is in jail, accused of collecting up to 1.5 million euros in kickbacks. Public money was also allegedly used to pay for Ábalos’s mistress’s house.

His party’s organization secretary, Santos Cerdán effectively the Socialist Party’s number three after Ábalos fell was forced to resign in June 2025 when investigators linked him to more than six hundred thousand euros in bribes from the Spanish construction giant Acciona in exchange for rigged infrastructure contracts.

And the “Delcygate” scandal, in which Sánchez’s government secretly hosted sanctioned Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez in Madrid in 2020 despite an EU travel ban Sánchez denied knowing about it at the time, but the Civil Guard’s investigation has since established that he did.

This is not a short list. It is not a cherry-picked list. It is the actual state of the Spanish government the Spanish production team holds up as Europe’s moral conscience. A government whose wife, brother, attorney general, former transport minister, and party organization secretary are all either under investigation, on trial, or criminally convicted while the prime minister himself flies to Beijing to be applauded by a dictator for being principled.

A cat always lands on his feet. So does a man running away from his own prosecutor.

About That “Right Side of History”

Xi Jinping told Sánchez that Spain and China are “principled countries” standing on the right side of history. The video presents this without audit, as if the speaker’s credentials do not bear examination. They do. Let us examine them.

Over one million Uyghurs are held in camps in Xinjiang. More than a thousand mosques have been demolished. Forced sterilization of Uyghur women has been documented in the state’s own leaked internal files. This alone would be the largest mass internment of an ethno-religious group since the Third Reich. It is the tip of the pyramid.

Roughly one million Tibetan children have been removed from their families and placed in state-run boarding schools to be Sinicized out of their own language and Buddhist faith. This is happening in real time, right now, on the continent of Asia, while VisualPolitik films in the Netherlands.

The China Tribunal, an independent body convened in London and chaired by Sir Geoffrey Nice KC the prosecutor who tried Slobodan Milošević at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia concluded in 2019, beyond reasonable doubt, that the Chinese state is forcibly harvesting organs from living prisoners of conscience, primarily Falun Gong practitioners. Not alleged. Concluded by a real tribunal on the evidence.

In the domain of the faith the video claims to defend, Chinese Christians have seen crosses torn from church roofs across Zhejiang province, house churches raided monthly, and Pastor Wang Yi of Chengdu’s Early Rain Covenant Church sentenced to nine years in prison for preaching the Gospel. In Hong Kong, Cardinal Joseph Zen was arrested at ninety years of age. The Vatican signed a secret agreement with Beijing that grants the Communist Party a veto over the appointment of Catholic bishops. Underground Catholics worship at risk of disappearance.

In Hong Kong, Jimmy Lai is on trial for the crime of journalism. Apple Daily has been shut down. The 2020 National Security Law criminalizes speech retroactively and extraterritorially Beijing claims jurisdiction over your words, spoken anywhere on earth.

The political body count is staggering. The Great Leap Forward (1958–62) killed thirty to forty-five million Chinese by engineered famine documented exhaustively by Frank Dikötter from the Chinese Communist Party’s own archives. The Cultural Revolution (1966–76) killed another one to two million and destroyed four thousand years of cultural inheritance. Tiananmen Square 1989 the date itself cannot legally be typed into a Chinese search engine thirty-seven years later.

Now try this simple test. Name one living Chinese dissident. Any one. Now name ten American dissidents. You cannot do the first because they are dead or in cells. You can do the second in twenty seconds. Free countries produce critics by the million. Unfree countries produce silence. That is the only tell that matters, and it is decisive.

Xi Jinping blessing Sánchez as “principled” is what it looks like when two cornered autocrats agree not to ask each other uncomfortable questions.

The 5% Math Does Not Add Up

The video calls the NATO 5% defense spending target “exorbitant.” It also warns, in the same breath, that America’s pullback is emboldening Putin. These two claims cannot both be true. One of them has to give.

If Russia is a serious threat, the coherent response is to spend more on defense, not less. If 5% is exorbitant, then Russia must not be the threat the video claims it is. Pick one. The video picks both, because the real position dare not be stated plainly: America should pay for everything, Europe should pay for nothing, and anyone who objects is abandoning the alliance.

Here is the historical accounting. The United States sustained four to nine percent of GDP on defense spending for forty years of the Cold War precisely in order to protect Europe from the same Russia that the video now says is urgent. Today the United States sits at roughly 3.4% and that is somehow described as abandonment. This is not analysis. It is gaslighting.

In 2024, Spain ranked dead last in NATO at 1.3% of GDP below even the 2% target that the Wales summit set in 2014 and that Spain had missed for a decade. At The Hague summit in June 2025, thirty-one allies committed to 5% of GDP by 2035. Germany signed. Britain signed. Italy signed. France signed. Poland was already at 4.7%. The Baltics pledged 3.5% by 2029. Sánchez was the only leader who refused.

This is what the Spanish production team calls principled. It is not principled. It is freeloading dressed in the vocabulary of resistance.

The Men Sánchez Actually Needs to Stay in Power

Here is what the video does not mention about how Pedro Sánchez occupies his office at all.

He lost the July 2023 election. The conservative Popular Party received more votes. He stayed in the prime minister’s office by assembling a coalition whose decisive votes came from Carles Puigdemont, the fugitive Catalan separatist leader who staged an illegal secession in 2017 and then fled to Belgium one step ahead of Spanish police.

The price of those seven votes was an amnesty law wiping the slate clean for Puigdemont and hundreds of other separatists. A law Spain’s own judiciary condemned as a violation of the separation of powers. A law the Popular Party leader Feijóo described as “an exchange of power for privileges and impunity.” A law that Vox called a coup. A law Sánchez had spent the entire 2023 campaign promising he would never pass, and which he passed within weeks of losing.

His current government depends on a coalition that includes the hard-left Sumar, Communist parties, Catalan separatists who openly want to break Spain apart, and Basque nationalists with the same aim. That is the governing majority. Those are the people he must please every single day to keep his office. That is why he rules by royal decree the migrant regularization of up to 1.6 million people was pushed through by decree precisely because parliament would not pass it.

This is the man VisualPolitik calls Europe’s anti-Trump leader. He is not standing on principle. He is standing on a trapdoor, kept aloft only by the votes of separatists and communists, distracting the Spanish public from his collapsing government by picking fights with the country that underwrites European security.

On the Pope, Honestly

Let me be plain about one thing the video is, on its own narrow terms, correct about.

The image of Donald Trump posted as Jesus Christ healing the sick is tasteless. It is self-aggrandizing. For any serious orthodox Christian, it comes close to blasphemy and as a believer, I do not defend it. His attacks on Pope Leo XIV for calling for peace in Iran were uncharitable and beneath the office he holds. He should have known better.

But the video commits a category error of breathtaking proportions. It places a crass meme on the same moral scale as running concentration camps, harvesting the organs of dissidents, and jailing Christian pastors for preaching the Gospel. It argues, in effect: Trump is rude to the Pope, therefore Europe is justified in pivoting toward Beijing.

No serious moral reasoning works this way. You do not respond to a man’s bad manners by allying with a regime that has killed more Christians than any state in human history. The same Chinese Communist Party that Xi Jinping leads has torn down crosses across Zhejiang, imprisoned Pastor Wang Yi for preaching, arrested a ninety-year-old Cardinal, and demanded the right to veto the appointments of Catholic bishops through a secret agreement with the Vatican.

If you care about the Church enough to be furious about Trump’s blasphemy, you should be incandescent about the regime Sánchez just flew to embrace. If you are not, then the outrage is not about the Church at all. It is about politics, wearing the Church as a costume.

The Only Test That Matters

All the sophistication of European commentary on multilateralism, multipolarity, principled opposition and the crumbling rules-based order dissolves against one simple observation.

The whole migrating world is running toward America. Not one person on earth is running toward Beijing.

Millions of Africans, Latin Americans, Middle Easterners, Asians, and yes, even Spaniards risk their lives every year to reach the United States. Zero of them are risking their lives to reach Shenzhen or Shanghai for the glories of the multipolar order. The feet vote. The feet have been voting for two centuries. They are not walking to Beijing.

When Spanish judges close in on his family, Pedro Sánchez flies straight to Beijing. Why? Because Xi will not ask uncomfortable questions about his wife’s four criminal charges, his brother’s indictment, or the first Attorney General in Spanish democratic history to be criminally convicted. Cornered autocrats protect each other. That is what this week was. The Spanish camera crew called it statesmanship.

America warts, sins, tacky memes, and all is still the country the migrating world runs toward, never from. The eccentric brother who built the house is still the brother. The mass murderer being invited over to spite him is still a mass murderer. No amount of slick production and multilateralism vocabulary changes that arithmetic.

Pedro Sánchez is not on the right side of history. He is on the side of history that history eventually buries the side of the cornered elite flying to a tyrant because the judges at home are finally arriving at the door. The flag the video insults is the only reason anyone is free to insult it. Try that speech in Shanghai and see how principled the right side of history treats you.

The fact that you are safe to be this wrong is the argument.

And the fact that the argument had to be made by someone outside the Madrid media ecosystem, because the Madrid media ecosystem is busy telling you the emperor has a beautiful new wardrobe, is the whole reason this piece had to be written.

Pedro Sánchez stood at a red-draped podium this week and told Spain that anyone opposing his decree to regularize half a million illegal migrants belongs to “the extreme right.” He said Spaniards are “children of migration” and will “not be the parents of xenophobia.” He declared himself, as leftists reliably do when they have run out of arguments, on “the right side of history.”

It is worth asking which history he thinks he’s on the right side of. Because history has a great deal to say about rulers like him, and none of it is flattering.

Spain’s Real Founding Story

Spain was not built by migration. Spain was built by the Reconquista—seven centuries of struggle, sacrifice, and bloodshed to reclaim the Iberian Peninsula from Islamic conquest, culminating in 1492 under Ferdinand and Isabella. That is the founding story of modern Spain. Every cathedral, every language, every institution that makes Spain Spain was forged in that long war against foreign occupation. To call the descendants of that civilization “children of migration” is not history. It is propaganda dressed up as humility, akin to the divisive false narratives addressed in A Bold Rebuttal to the Divisive False Narratives of Dutch EO Broadcasting Network.

Rule By Decree

Sánchez does not have the votes. The mass regularization stalled in the Spanish parliament for over a year because there is no majority for it. So he is pushing it through by royal decree bypassing the legislature entirely. This is not democracy. It is rule by edict, the familiar pattern of every decadent European elite governing against the express wishes of its own citizens.

The Number Is a Lie

The government publicly claims “500,000.” Spain’s own National Immigration and Borders Center estimates the real figure at between 1 million and 1.35 million. The General Commissariat puts it as high as 1.6 million more than triple the advertised number. Within 48 hours of the announcement, tens of thousands were already queueing at Moroccan and Algerian consulates to collect paperwork. The magnet effect is not a theory. It is a pattern visible in real time.

The Lesson of Weimar

History has seen this film before, and it does not end the way Sánchez imagines.

Weimar Germany in the 1920s was governed by a managerial elite that severed itself from God, from nation, and from the provincial population it ruled. While hyperinflation devoured the savings of ordinary Germans twice in a decade, Berlin’s ruling class celebrated open sexual revolution, mocked the Church, and told anyone who objected that they were reactionary peasants on the wrong side of progress. The establishment did not believe in Germany anymore. They told themselves this was sophistication.

What this produced was not one soft country. It produced a bifurcated country a decadent urban elite and a humiliated, radicalized provincial base. The provincial base eventually ate the elite. The lesson is not “leftism makes people soft.” The lesson is that ruling classes which cut themselves off from the faith, the memory, and the dignity of their own people summon the very reaction they claim to fear. Every cordon sanitaire the Weimar center erected against the “extreme right” failed, because the center had nothing left to defend.

Britain learned the parallel lesson through Chamberlain. A Conservative, not a leftist but a perfect specimen of the interwar managerial class that had lost its nerve after the Somme, disarmed for a decade while Germany rearmed in the open, signed away Czechoslovakia at Munich, and sold the public appeasement as wisdom. Churchill was treated as a dangerous crank for telling the truth. The people who called him extreme were the same people who then needed him to save their country.

The pattern is consistent across a century: when the governing class loses its religion, its nerve, and its connection to its own people, it summons disaster. Sánchez is not an original. He is a type.

Tribes Are Real, Utopias Are Not

There is a reason every utopian experiment in forced multicultural fusion has ended in the same place. It is not bigotry that explains this. It is anthropology.

Human beings organize around shared language, shared faith, shared ancestors, and shared memory. These bonds are not costumes that dissolve in the wash of a press release. Tito’s Yugoslavia seven decades of enforced “brotherhood and unity” under a socialist regime that criminalized ethnic identity fractured in the 1990s along exactly the lines Tito denied existed, producing Srebrenica. Lebanon was once called the Switzerland of the Middle East; demographic change shattered its fragile confessional balance and delivered fifteen years of civil war. Cyprus partitioned. Northern Ireland bled for thirty years over a border most of Europe could not find on a map. India and Pakistan partitioned in 1947 at the cost of a million dead and fifteen million displaced. The Soviet Union, the most ambitious multiethnic utopia in human history, collapsed the moment the boot lifted.

The record is not ambiguous. Peoples with distinct civilizations do not melt into one people because a decree says they must. They coexist under pressure, and when the pressure releases economic, political, demographic the seams tear along the lines that were always there.

Sánchez is not building a nation. He is building seams.

What Replacement Has Already Produced

Look north to Sweden, where grenade attacks, gang shootings, and no-go zones are now routine features of daily life a country that once exported safety and now imports bombings. Look to France, where churches burn, schools quietly accommodate sharia-adjacent demands, and whole suburbs operate outside French law. Look to Britain, where grooming gangs were covered up for two decades because prosecuting them was considered “racist.” These are not right-wing talking points. They are the published record of the last twenty years.

This is the seventh Spanish amnesty in forty years. The previous six legalized over 1.75 million people and were each followed by another surge in illegal entry. Sánchez is not correcting an aberration. He is accelerating a curve that the historical data already shows bending toward crisis.

A Warning, Not a Threat

It needs to be said plainly, because the political class is incapable of hearing it. When citizens are told for thirty years that their objections are bigotry, that their country was never really theirs, that their history is shameful and their future is negotiable, and that anyone who disagrees is a fascist eventually some of them stop arguing. That is how civil conflict begins. Not because the right is uniquely dangerous, but because human beings who feel dispossessed in their own homeland eventually behave like human beings who feel dispossessed in their own homeland. Yugoslavia taught this. Lebanon taught this. Northern Ireland taught this. Every decadent elite that thought it could ride out the resentment it was manufacturing has been proven wrong, and the cost has always been paid by ordinary people on both sides.

This is a warning, not a wish. The people shouting it are trying to prevent it. The people dismissing it as extremism are the ones making it inevitable.

Suicidal Empathy

What the Sánchez podium calls “the right side of history” is in truth a counterfeit of Christian charity a managerial decadence dressed up as compassion. Real compassion has borders, because a home without walls is not a home and cannot shelter anyone. Suicidal empathy is not love of neighbor. It is the abdication of every duty one owes to God, country, and kin, rebranded as virtue.

The Real Choice

Caring for the stranger is a genuine Christian duty. It is not a duty to hand a nation away. A country that will not defend its own people, its own laws, and its own inheritance has no moral standing to lecture anyone about justice.

Spain survived eight hundred years of occupation. It did not survive by calling its defenders xenophobes. It survived because its people knew who they were, knew whose they were, and knew what they owed the generations that bled to hand the country down to them.

Sánchez is not on the right side of history. He is standing exactly where Weimar’s elite stood in 1928, and exactly where Chamberlain stood in 1938 confident, credentialed, applauded by his own class, and catastrophically wrong.

The “Jibril” of the Islamic tradition preached another gospel. Paul’s verdict is clear. This is not Christian triumphalism it is the direct application of the apostolic standard Paul established precisely because he knew this kind of counterfeit was coming.

3.1 Evidential Weaknesses: Chain Fragility, Contradictions, and the Preservation Myth

The Isnad Problem

The entire Hira account rests on single-threaded chains. Aisha who was not present at the Hira encounter, was not born when the thighs test allegedly occurred, and was a child during the early Meccan period serves as the primary relay for Khadijah’s testimony. Khadijah died in 619 CE. The biographical timeline makes direct transmission problematic at best.

Bukhari compiled his collection approximately 200–230 years after the Hira event, selecting from an estimated 600,000 hadith candidates to arrive at approximately 7,000 (with repetitions). The very scale of the selection process and the acknowledged need for selection confirms that fabrication and error existed in the corpus at a rate that makes individual narration reliability a legitimate scholarly question. This is not an anti-Islamic observation; it is the consensus of Western hadith scholarship (Schacht 1950; Juynboll 1983).

Internal Contradictions in the Hira Account

The Textual Preservation Myth

Islam’s claim of perfect Quranic preservation is internally refuted by Bukhari 6:61:510: Caliph Uthman ordered the burning of all variant manuscripts, standardizing a single text. You do not burn variant texts if there are no variants.

The Sana’a palimpsest (discovered in the Grand Mosque of Yemen, 1972; analyzed by Gerd Puin and Hans-Caspar Graf von Bothmer; published academically by Sadeghi and Bergmann, Der Islam 87:149, 2010; available at corpuscoranicum.de) contains a lower-text manuscript with significant variants from the standard Uthmanic text including variants in Surah 96, the Hira revelation itself. The text Islam claims was perfectly preserved shows evidence of revision.

Compare: The New Testament resurrection account is corroborated by over 500 contemporaneous witnesses (1 Corinthians 15:6), written within 20 years of the events, across multiple independent source traditions, acknowledged by non-Christian historians (Josephus, Tacitus, Pliny the Younger). The Hira account has: one man’s testimony, reported by his wife, relayed through chains, compiled 230 years later.

3.2 Psychological Plausibility: The Neurology of Prophetic Experience

The scientific hypothesis must be addressed honestly. Muhammad’s symptom cluster across the Hira accounts is clinically significant:

• Visual auras: a horizon-filling luminous entity
• Auditory hallucinations: a commanding voice repeating a single word
• Ictal terror: collapse, shaking, sweating, color change
• Post-ictal exhaustion: need to be covered, inability to function
• Hypergraphia (inter-ictal): prolific dictation of complex material
• Pre-ictal priming: weeks of isolation, fasting, sleep deprivation known seizure triggers

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) produces all of these. The pre-ictal ascetic isolation at Hira sleep deprivation, fasting, social isolation, sensory monotony in a narrow cave constitutes near-perfect seizure provocation. The cultural priming (Arab tradition that mountain peaks were jinn-haunted, that altered states indicated supernatural contact) would shape the interpretive framework applied to the ictal experience.

Owsei Temkin’s The Falling Sickness (1971) provides historical context for the conflation of epilepsy with divine or demonic visitation across ancient cultures. V.S. Ramachandran’s work on temporal lobe activity and religious experience (Phantoms in the Brain, 1998) is directly relevant. Modern fMRI studies of mystical states demonstrate consistent temporal lobe activation patterns.

The TLE hypothesis does not exhaust the explanation. A Christian framework adds a further layer: demonic activity can exploit and amplify neurological vulnerability (cf. Job 2:7 Satan afflicts the body; Mark 9:14–29 demonic seizure activity). The explanations are not mutually exclusive. A demonically influenced mind experiencing genuine neurological symptoms would produce exactly what the Hira accounts describe.

3.3 The Biblical Prophet Tests: Islam Fails All of Them

Test 1: Deuteronomy 18:20–22 Predictive Accuracy

The standard: If a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD and the thing does not happen, the prophet has spoken presumptuously and is not to be feared.

• Quran 30:2–4 predicts the Byzantines will defeat the Persians “in bid’ sinin” translated as “a few years.” The Byzantine victory came 7–9 years later. The prediction is ambiguous enough to be retrofitted to a wide range of outcomes the hallmark of a non-falsifiable prophecy.
• Quran 54:1 and Tirmidhi 3299: The moon split as a miracle. Zero external corroboration no Byzantine chronicles, no Chinese astronomical records, no Indian observations record a visible lunar fissure. The moon’s geological record (Apollo samples) shows no fracturing event in the last billion years. A miracle of this magnitude, visible from Arabia, would have been recorded globally. It was not.

Test 2: Deuteronomy 13:1–5 Doctrinal Continuity with Prior Revelation

The standard: Even if a prophet performs signs and wonders, if he leads you away from the God revealed in Torah, he is a false prophet.

• The crucifixion: Quran 4:157 denies it (“they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him”); the historical crucifixion of Jesus is among the best-attested facts in ancient history (Tacitus, Josephus, Lucian of Samosata; multiple independent Gospel traditions; Paul writing within 5 years of the event)
• The Trinity: Quran 5:73,116 caricatures the Trinity as “Allah, Jesus, and Mary” a tritheist formulation rejected by all orthodox Christianity. It refutes a position no Christian holds.
• The Incarnation: Quran denies the Word became flesh (John 1:14); Islam denies Sonship (4:171) the entire covenant structure of Scripture depends on the Son
• The tahrif self-refutation: Islam claims Jews and Christians corrupted their Scriptures (Quran 2:79) yet the Quran simultaneously affirms the Tawrat, Injil, and Zabur as authentic (Quran 5:46–47; 32:23; 6:115; 85:21–22). This is a self-refuting circular argument: the very Scriptures the Quran validates are simultaneously declared corrupted, yet the Quran’s authority rests on the prophetic chain those Scriptures establish.

Galatians 1:8 applies directly and without qualification: “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse.” The Hira entity preached another gospel. The apostolic verdict is anathema.

Test 3: Isaiah 8:20 Conformity to Prior Scripture

“To the law and to the testimony! If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.” Muhammad’s revelation contradicts the law and testimony at every structural point. The verdict of Isaiah’s criterion: no light.

3.4 The Demonic Pattern: Point-by-Point Analysis

The biblical fingerprints of demonic activity versus divine visitation are well-documented in Scripture. Applied to the Hira account, the contrast is unambiguous:

A. Terror Induction vs. Divine Peace

Demonic pattern: Demons seize, terrify, and destabilize. Mark 9:20 the demon-possessed boy “fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.” Acts 19:16 — the demon “overpowered them all… they fled naked and wounded.”

Divine pattern: Angels consistently reassure. Daniel 10:19 “Do not be afraid… Peace! Be strong now; be strong.” Luke 1:30 “Do not be afraid, Mary.” Isaiah 6:6–7 the seraph cleanses; Isaiah is not crushed.

The Hira entity: Squeezes Muhammad to the point of near-death, three times, until he flees home in terror shouting “Cover me!” a trauma response, not a divine calling.

B. Physical Violence vs. Gentle Touch

Demonic pattern: Luke 13:11–16 the bent woman was “bound by Satan for 18 years.” Mark 9:22 the demon “has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him.”

Divine pattern: Isaiah 6:6 the seraph touches coal gently to Isaiah’s lips. Daniel 9:21 Gabriel “came in swift flight and touched me.” 1 Kings 19:5 the angel “touched Elijah and said, ‘Get up and eat.’”

The Hira entity: Chest-crushing assault repeated three times until Muhammad believed his soul would depart (Musnad Ahmad 1:301). This is demonic oppression, not angelic ministry.

C. Identity Confusion and Impersonation

The biblical Gabriel: Daniel 9:21 heralds the Messiah’s coming with a precise 490-year timeline. Luke 1:26–38 announces the Incarnation to Mary with clarity, gentleness, and explicit identification.

The Hira “Jibril”: Denies the Messiah’s Sonship (Quran 4:171), denies the crucifixion (4:157), denies the Trinity (5:73), contradicts the entirety of Gabriel’s prior message. Either the biblical Gabriel underwent a complete theological reversal between Luke 1 and Ghar Hira, or they are not the same entity.

The Satanic Verses episode confirms it: This entity is impersonatable by Satan. Which means the entire revelatory chain is suspect.

D. Pagan Superstition as Validation

Deuteronomy 18:10–12: “Let no one be found among you… who practices divination or seeks omens… who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD.”

Khadijah’s thighs test is the application of pre-Islamic Arabian folk divination to supernatural discernment. It belongs in the same category as consulting a medium or reading entrails. The fact that Sunni scholarship grades it as authentic (islamqa.info/182941) and uses it as evidence for Muhammad’s prophethood means this pagan practice is woven into Islam’s foundational validation. Detestable is the word Scripture uses.

E. The Fruits Matthew 7:15–20

“By their fruits you will recognize them.” What followed the Hira encounter?

• Political assassinations: the killing of poets who mocked Muhammad Ka’b ibn al-Ashraf (Ibn Ishaq, Guillaume p. 368), Abu Rafi’ (Guillaume p. 482), Asma bint Marwan (Guillaume p. 675–676)
• Marriage to a 6-year-old, consummated at 9: multiply attested (Bukhari 7:62:64; Muslim 8:3309) and defended in classical fiqh
• The Zaynab convenience: Quran 33:37 a “revelation” permitting Muhammad to marry his adopted son’s divorced wife, overriding the adoption prohibition that stood in his way
• Sex slavery: Mariyah the Copt taken as a concubine (Muslim 8:3240); Quran 4:24 explicitly permits sexual access to female war captives
• Surah 9:5 the “Sword Verse”: “Slay the polytheists wherever you find them” abrogating earlier peaceful verses by the classical principle of naskh

These are not fringe positions. They are mainstream fiqh derived directly from texts graded as authoritative. A tree producing these fruits does not have a divine root.

F. Heretical Genealogy: The Waraqa Problem

The first external human validator of Muhammad’s prophethood (Waraqa ibn Nawfal) belonged, per Epiphanius’s Panarion (30), to a sect that denied Christ’s divinity and resurrection. His theological framework was already aligned with what Muhammad would subsequently “reveal.” This is not coincidence it is intellectual genealogy. Satan uses theological error as a delivery mechanism (2 Peter 2:1; Jude 1:4).

3.5 Theological and Moral Discontinuity: Allah Is Not Yahweh

This is not a matter of names or cultural translation. The theological character of Allah as revealed in the Quran is discontinuous with the character of Yahweh revealed in Scripture at fundamental points:

• Divine nature: Allah is described in voluntaristic terms what Allah wills is right by definition (Ash’ari theology). Quran 8:17: “You did not throw when you threw, but Allah threw.” Quran 76:30: “But you cannot will unless Allah wills.” Yahweh, by contrast, is bound by His own nature He cannot lie (Titus 1:2), cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13), and cannot be tempted by evil (James 1:13). These are not the same God.
• Covenant structure: Yahweh is a covenant-making, covenant-keeping God whose entire revelation history is a progressive unfolding of redemption culminating in the Incarnation. Allah has no covenant in this sense the relationship is submission (islam) to sovereign will, not covenant relationship. The structural difference is irreducible.
• Moral character post-Hira: Moses was the meekest man on earth (Numbers 12:3). After receiving the Law, he did not assassinate critics. The contrast with Muhammad’s post-Hira career political violence, sexual accommodations via “revelation,” elimination of opponents represents a moral discontinuity that Scripture associates with false prophecy, not divine calling.

3.6 Natural Theology: The Evidence Points Elsewhere

Causality and the cosmological argument: A contingent, finite universe one that began to exist (affirmed by Big Bang cosmology, Borde-Guth-Vilenkin theorem) requires a transcendent, uncaused cause. This cause must be outside time, outside space, immensely powerful, and personal. This is not theology alone it is the physics of origins applied rigorously (William Lane Craig, The Kalam Cosmological Argument; Roger Penrose, The Road to Reality).

Fine-tuning: The cosmological constant, gravitational constant, strong nuclear force, and approximately 30+ fundamental constants must be calibrated to extraordinary precision for any complex chemistry let alone life to exist. Robin Collins and Luke Barnes (A Fortunate Universe, 2016) and Roger Penrose have quantified the improbability at 10^–10123. Blind chance does not produce 120 orders of magnitude of precision. An intentional Designer does.

The Resurrection: Gary Habermas’s minimal facts methodology identifies 12 historical facts about Jesus’s death and post-mortem appearances accepted by a majority of critical NT scholars regardless of theological commitments. The best explanation of those 12 facts including the empty tomb, post-mortem appearances to individuals and groups, the conversion of Paul and James (both hostile to the movement), and the origin of the early church is the resurrection. No alternative hypothesis adequately accounts for all 12 simultaneously.

The God who raised Jesus from the dead is identified as Yahweh of the Old Testament. The continuity of Scripture from Genesis through Revelation is the very continuity the Hira account ruptures. The rupture is not incidental. It is the point.

ADDRESSING THE STANDARD ISLAMIC OBJECTIONS

Objection 1: “Biblical Prophets Also Fell Prostrate in Terror”

This is the most serious objection and deserves a direct answer. Isaiah 6:5 “Woe to me! I am ruined!” Daniel 10:9 “I had no strength left, my face turned deathly pale and I was helpless.” Ezekiel 1:28 “When I saw it, I fell facedown.” The objection is fair: biblical prophets also experienced overwhelming encounters.

The differences are decisive:

• Direction: Biblical prophets’ terror gives way immediately to divine reassurance and commissioning. Isaiah’s “I am ruined” is followed within the same passage by cleansing, forgiveness, and calling. Muhammad’s terror does not give way to peace it gives way to continued trauma, depression severe enough to approach self-harm during the fatrah (Bukhari 9:87:111), and a three-year silence from the entity.
• Physical assault: No biblical prophet is physically assaulted by the divine entity. Angels touch gently (Isaiah 6:6; Daniel 9:21; 1 Kings 19:5). The crushing-to-near-death is categorically different from prostration due to awe.
• Clarity of identification: In every biblical encounter, the identity of the messenger and the message is clear and verifiable. Gabriel identifies himself (Luke 1:19). The LORD speaks from the burning bush (Exodus 3:2–4). The Hira entity never clearly identifies itself and produces a revelation that was successfully counterfeited by Satan.
• Theological continuity: Every biblical prophet without exception points forward to the Messianic covenant. Muhammad’s entity points away from it.

Objection 2: “The Quran Is a Linguistic Miracle Proving Divine Origin”

• This is an aesthetic argument evaluated entirely within Arabic inaccessible as evidence to the majority of humanity and unverifiable by independent cross-cultural comparison
• Literary quality has never been a criterion for divine inspiration in any branch of Abrahamic theology it would prove Shakespeare’s divinity before Muhammad’s
• The pre-Islamic Mu’allaqat demonstrates that extraordinary Arabic literary achievement predated Muhammad he was working in a tradition of acknowledged excellence
• Variants in the manuscript tradition (Sana’a palimpsest, Hafs/Warsh divergence, Uthman’s burning of alternatives) undermine the claim of perfect preservation the miracle argument requires

Objection 3: “The Rapid Spread of Islam Proves Divine Origin”

The rapid spread of Islam in the 7th century is a historical fact. It is not evidence of divine origin. Macedonian paganism spread rapidly under Alexander. The Mongol Empire spread rapidly. The Black Death spread rapidly. Rapid spread is explained by military effectiveness, social conditions, political vacuums, and ideological coherence none of which require divine causation.

The early Christian movement, by contrast, spread without military force, against active persecution by the most powerful empire in human history, fueled entirely by testimony to a resurrection that its witnesses were willing to die to affirm. That is a different category of evidence entirely.

Objection 4: “The Thighs Test Is a Weak Narration”

This claim is refuted by the Sunni grading system’s own scholars. Islamqa.info/182941, representing the Ibn Baz school (mainstream Saudi Salafism), explicitly endorses the narration as authentic. Ahmad Shakir grades Musnad Ahmad 6:294 as sahih. Al-Haythami in Majma’ al-Zawa’id 9:24 grades the Tabarani narration as sahih.

If the Sunni hadith sciences are reliable enough to establish the five pillars, they are reliable enough to establish the thighs test. Islamic apologists cannot selectively invoke hadith grading methodology only when it produces convenient results.

CONCLUSION: THE VERDICT

The evidence assembled across all three phases points in one direction with cumulative force:

• The Hira encounter was not divine commissioning. It was a terror event characterized by physical violence, compelled recitation under duress, and a trauma response that left Muhammad functionally incapacitated.
• The validation mechanism Khadijah’s thighs test is pre-Islamic Arabian jinn-detection folk practice. It is pagan divination applied to the most important theological event in Islamic history. It is explicitly condemned by the Torah (Deuteronomy 18:10–12).
• The entity produced a revelation that directly contradicts prior Scripture at every structural point. Per Galatians 1:8, this is the defining test. The verdict is anathema.
• The pattern terror, violence, impersonation vulnerability, pagan validation, doctrinal innovation against prior revelation is the pattern of demonic mimicry described in 2 Corinthians 11:14 and 1 John 4:1, not the pattern of divine commissioning found in Isaiah 6, Luke 1, or Acts 9.
• The evidential basis single-threaded isnad chains, compiled 200+ years post-event, with documented variant texts and acknowledged fabrication problems does not meet the standard required to overturn the testimony of Scripture, natural theology, and the historically established resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Islam’s “angel” is a demonic impersonation that spawned a self-refuting ideology. The tahrif argument destroys the prophetic chain the Quran depends on for its own authority. The Satanic Verses episode demolishes the claim of perfect revelatory transmission. The thighs test exposes pagan foundations. The doctrinal content fails every biblical test for authentic prophecy.

None of this is an attack on Muslim people. Individual Muslims live with genuine sincerity, dignity, and moral seriousness within a framework they were born into and have never had reason to critically examine. They bear the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and are owed the truth. Truth spoken in love is not cruelty silence is cruelty.

“If I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.”

The Gospel: Christ crucified for sinners (1 Corinthians 1:23), risen from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:4), offering justification by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9) not by works, not by submission to sovereign will, but by receiving the gift of a God who entered His own creation to redeem it. That is the message the “Jibril” of Ghar Hira contradicts. That is why this document exists.

PHASE 2: THE KHADIJAH “THIGHS TEST”

Introduction to Phase 2

Immediately following Muhammad’s traumatic inaugural encounter in Ghar Hira (~610 CE), his first wife Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (c. 555–619 CE, approximately 15 years his senior, a wealthy widow, formerly his employer) orchestrates a “test” to determine whether the visitor was an angel (Jibril) or a jinn/demon (shaytan). This episode, absent entirely from the Quran, is preserved in the Sira literature, select Hadith (Musnad Ahmad, Al-Tabarani), and referenced in classical Tafsir via contextual implication.

The mechanism of the test is rooted entirely in pre-Islamic Arabian folk belief: jinn were believed to be repulsed by the exposure of a woman’s genitalia. Therefore, if the supernatural visitor stayed in Muhammad’s presence while Khadijah exposed herself, it was an angel; if it fled, it was a jinn. This is pagan divination, full stop. There is no biblical, theological, or rational basis for this test. And it is not a marginal account. Sunni scholars grade the narrations as authentic.

Verified sources: sunnah.com (cross-references), islamqa.info/182941 (explicit Salafi endorsement: “authentic narration”), quranx.com (contextual Tafsirs), Guillaume’s Sirat Rasul Allah (1955). No eyewitnesses beyond Khadijah and Muhammad; chains trace to companions including Ubaidullah ibn Abi Talha and Aisha.

From a biblical standpoint, consulting folk omens is an abomination (Leviticus 19:31; Deuteronomy 18:10–12). Yahweh’s prophets validate revelation by its conformity to prior Scripture (Isaiah 8:20; Deuteronomy 13:1–5), not by whether a supernatural entity is repulsed by female genitalia. This “proof” is pagan at its root, immoral in its execution, and evidentially worthless.

2.1 Immediate Aftermath: Muhammad’s Collapse and Khadijah’s Response

“He went to Khadijah bint Khuwaylid and said, ‘Cover me! Cover me!’ They covered him till his fear was over and then he told her everything that had happened.”

Khadijah’s reassurance is theologically significant for what it is not: she does not cite Scripture, prophetic precedent, or any divine criterion for validating prophethood. She cites character references. This is not theological discernment it is the assessment of a loyal wife defending her husband. And then she proposes the test.

2.2 The Test Mechanism: Rooted Entirely in Pagan Jinn Lore

The test’s core mechanism: place Muhammad between Khadijah’s thighs (khasr or fakhidhayn thighs/legs; farj pudenda/vulva region in the most explicit narrations). The theory: angels are not repulsed by female genitalia, while jinn flee from it. The entity’s response determines its identity.

“She said to him: ‘O son of my uncle, can you describe to me this companion of yours?’… ‘I will go to him (atahu) and sit on my thigh (fakhidhi). When he comes to you and you see him sitting on my thigh, and if you see him then as a satanic creature (shaytan), he will struggle violently to get away (istawsa’a minhu); but if he is an angel (mala’ah), he will rejoice and feel happy (istabshir).’”

Let every reader sit with what just happened: the foundational validation that Muhammad’s prophetic encounter was genuine rests not on fulfilled prophecy, not on conformity to Torah or Gospel, not on miraculous works witnessed by multiple people but on whether an entity fled the sight of an elderly woman’s exposed genitalia. This is the epistemological bedrock of Islam.

2.3 Execution of the Test and Additional Sources

“Khadijah bint Khuwaylid tested it (ja’alat al-rasul baynaha wa baynahu) by uncovering her thigh (khasr) and placing the Messenger of Allah between her and it. The angel departed (kharaja al-mala’ah), indicative (dalil) that it was an angel, not Satan.”

Additional corroboration of the pagan framework: Ibn Sa’d, Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kabir 1:131 (via Waqidi tradition) records the pre-Islamic belief that jinn flee “women’s farj” the folk belief used as the theoretical basis for the test. Ibn al-Kalbi’s Kitab al-Asnam confirms this was standard pre-Islamic Arabian jinn-detection methodology.

Khadijah’s test was not a theological innovation it was standard Arabian jinn-exorcism practice applied to the founding event of a major world religion.

Some narrations soften the language to “legs” (fakhidhayn) rather than the more explicit khasr or farj found in the Musnad Ahmad and al-Tabarani narrations. Islamic apologists occasionally exploit this variance to deflect criticism. The deflection fails: the mechanism of the test is identical regardless of lexical softening, and the Salafi scholarly tradition endorses the explicit narrations as authentic. You cannot selectively invoke your own grading system only when it produces convenient results.

2.4 Post-Test: The Transition to Waraqa ibn Nawfal

The test “succeeds” the entity departs and Khadijah declares it an angel. They then consult:

The first external human validator of Muhammad’s prophethood was not an orthodox Christian, not a rabbi, not any representative of mainstream Abrahamic tradition he was a member of a heretical sect. Waraqa ibn Nawfal, per Epiphanius (Panarion 30), belonged to a group that denied the divinity of Christ, rejected the Trinity, and held Jesus to be merely a prophet. His theology was already aligned with what Muhammad would later “reveal.” This is not coincidence it is intellectual genealogy. Satan uses false teachers (2 Peter 2:1).

2.5 Textual Authenticity, Chain Analysis, and the Immoral Optics

Sunni grading: The narrations are sahih or hasan across al-Haythami, al-Albani, and Ahmad Shakir. The chains are short but the matn (textual content) is folkloric in character, matching pre-Islamic Arabian jinn-detection practice rather than anything with precedent in authentic Abrahamic revelation.

The immoral optics require direct statement: a man in his 40s, traumatized and shaking, is pressed between the exposed thighs of his wife in order to determine whether a supernatural entity is following him. This is the founding validation event of Islam. There is no parallel none in the biblical record. Angels in Scripture are non-sexual beings (Matthew 22:30). No prophet validated divine encounter through sexual proximity.

The contrast with Luke 1:26–38 (Gabriel’s annunciation to Mary) could not be more stark: calm, clearly identified, verbally explicit, Mary’s reception entirely voluntary. No physical manipulation. No exposure. No pagan folk mechanism.

Islamic apologist organizations such as Yaqeen Institute acknowledge this episode is “a cultural idiom” while defending its authenticity. They cannot have it both ways: either it is authentic revelation-history in which case God validated His prophet via pagan jinn-lore or it is cultural folklore — in which case Islam’s founding validation is admitted to be unreliable.

There is no third option that saves the narrative.

PREFATORY NOTE: WHY THIS ARTICLE EXISTS

Islam rests on a single catastrophic claim: that an illiterate merchant in a cave outside Mecca received the final, perfect, and universal revelation of God from the angel Gabriel in 610 CE. Everything law, theology, eschatology, jihad doctrine, family law, the status of every non-Muslim on the planet hangs on that one event. If the Hira encounter was not what Muhammad claimed it was, the entire edifice collapses.

This document does not approach that claim with polite deference or interfaith hand-wringing. It applies the same evidential standard any reasonable historian, theologian, or scientist would apply to any extraordinary claim: extraordinary evidence is required. What we find instead is: late oral traditions, single-threaded chains of narration, internal contradictions, a “divine validation test” rooted in pre-Islamic pagan jinn-lore involving a woman’s thighs, and a pattern of behavior by the alleged “angel” that matches demonic activity in Scripture far more closely than divine visitation.

Individual Muslims are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and are owed truth spoken in love (Ephesians 4:15). That love is not served by silence. This document is the truth, fully documented, without apology.

PHASE 1: THE ALLEGED ANGELIC VISITATIONS AT GHAR HIRA

Introduction to Phase 1

This phase provides an exhaustive catalog of the claimed angelic visitations to Muhammad ibn Abdullah (c. 570–632 CE) during his initial “prophetic call,” primarily in Ghar Hira (Cave of Hira, Jabal al-Nur, approximately 3 miles from Mecca). These events, traditionally dated to 610 CE during Ramadan when Muhammad was approximately 40 years old, constitute Islam’s origin narrative. Without them, there is no Islam.

Critical preliminary: The Quran itself is nearly silent on the mechanics of these events. Quran 96:1–5 (Surah al-Alaq / “Iqra”) mentions a commanding voice but no angel. The identity of the entity as Jibril (Gabriel) is a retroactive assignment found exclusively in extra-Quranic sources. This is not a minor footnote it is a structural problem. The document upon which 1.8 billion people stake their eternal souls does not clearly identify who or what spoke in that cave.

Primary sources for Phase 1 are the Hadith corpora (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami’ at-Tirmidhi, Musnad Ahmad), the Sira (Ibn Ishaq, edited by Ibn Hisham), and classical Tafsir literature (Ibn Kathir, al-Tabari, al-Qurtubi). All citations verified via sunnah.com, quranx.com, islamqa.info, and corpuscoranicum.de.

No contemporary inscriptions or non-Muslim corroboration of any kind exists. Narrations stem entirely from oral isnad chains for example, Aisha bint Abi Bakr relaying to Bukhari (d. 870 CE) compiled 150–250 years after the alleged events. Chains are often single-threaded and vulnerable to fabrication (per Joseph Schacht, Origins of Muhammadan Jurisprudence, 1950).

From classical Christian apologetics grounded in Scripture, these “angels” induce terror, inflict physical violence, and generate theological doubt hallmarks of demonic deception (2 Corinthians 11:14; 1 John 4:1), not the modus operandi of Yahweh’s angels (Isaiah 6:2–7; Luke 1:30: “Fear not”). The detailed record below exposes a pattern of psychological trauma where Scripture promises divine peace.

1.1 Pre-Revelation Context: Muhammad’s Retreat to Ghar Hira

Muhammad, described in Islamic tradition as ummi illiterate (Quran 7:157; Bukhari 1:3:114) was a Meccan merchant of the Quraysh Hashim clan. He engaged in tahannuth: a form of ascetic retreat inherited from the pre-Islamic Hanif monotheists, isolated religious seekers such as Zayd ibn Amr who rejected both Arab paganism and mainstream Abrahamic religion.

“The commencement of the Divine Inspiration to Allah’s Messenger was in the form of good righteous dreams which came true like bright daylight, and then the love of seclusion was bestowed upon him. He used to go in seclusion to the cave of Hira where he used to worship (yuhibu, continuous aspect an ongoing practice) there for a number of days and nights until he returned to Mecca.”

The Sira (Ibn Ishaq, Guillaume translation 1955, p. 105) records monthly retreats of one full lunar month, with Muhammad emerging with “unkempt hair,” fasting until his provisions were depleted. The cave itself is a narrow structure approximately 12 feet in height, bat-infested confirmed by modern archaeology at the UNESCO site.

Note the cultural backdrop: Arab tradition held that mountain peaks were haunted by jinn (Quran 72:1–2), and that poetry was a form of satanic inspiration a connection that will recur (cf. “Satanic Verses,” Bukhari 6:60:478). The isolation, sleep deprivation, fasting, and cultural priming for supernatural encounter are relevant data points. We return to them in Phase 3’s psychological analysis.

1.2 The Inaugural Visitation: The Triple Squeezing and the “Iqra” Command (610 CE)

A. Appearance of the Entity

A horizon-filling supernatural entity materializes before a lone, sleep-deprived man in a cave. The Tafsir of al-Tabari explicitly compares the descent to that of a jinn or spirit. This comparison is made by Islam’s own foremost commentator. File that.

B. The Verbal Command

“Jibril came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet replied, ‘I do not know how to read.’”

Sahih Muslim 1:301 records an identical account. Muhammad’s denial occurs three times.

C. The Physical Assault Triple Squeezing

This is the centerpiece of the encounter and deserves full documentation from every available source:

“The angel caught me (ghatta) forcefully and pressed (shaqaqa) me so hard (adhana) that I could not bear it anymore (fala aqla)… He released me and then commanded me again, and again I replied, ‘I do not know how to read.’ Whereupon he caught me again, squeezed me a second time, then a third time.”

Let that sink in: The entity that Muslims claim was the angel Gabriel the same Gabriel who told Mary “Do not be afraid” (Luke 1:30) grabbed an illiterate merchant and squeezed him until he thought he was dying. D. Recitation Extracted Under Duress

The angel “taught him by force”; Muhammad memorizes verbatim under physical compulsion.

The content “revealed” Quran 96:1–5 is extracted not through willing reception but through repeated physical assault until compliance. No biblical prophet receives revelation this way. None.

E. Muhammad’s Psychological State Immediately After

Muhammad rushes home trembling, crying: “Zammiluni! Zammiluni! (Cover me! Cover me!)” Khadijah wraps him in blankets.

This is the man Muslims claim received the final, perfect revelation of God. He ran home in panic, begged to be covered, and shook with terror. His first response was not worship, not praise, not theological proclamation it was a trauma response.

Compare Isaiah (Isaiah 6:6–8): after the seraph touched coal to his lips and pronounced him clean, Isaiah volunteered immediately “Here I am, send me.” No running. No hiding. No shaking.

1.3 Prelude: The Heart-Washing (Sharh Sadr) Prior Angelic Interventions

Islamic tradition claims multiple prior angelic encounters, including surgical procedures performed on Muhammad’s heart:

“Two men in white garments… split your chest… scooped out your heart… a black clot (qalbuhu sawad) described as Satan’s portion removed; washed with Zamzam water and gold water; chest resealed.” Witnesses: Halimah al-Sa’diyyah (wet-nurse).

Several observations are critical. First, this is a childhood procedure the black clot identified as “Satan’s portion” implies Muhammad was born spiritually defective in a way requiring supernatural surgical correction. Second, the concept of a “Satan’s portion” in a human heart is theologically alien to authentic Abrahamic revelation it implies a kind of spiritual substance dualism with no Old Testament precedent. Third, Islamqa.info grades this tradition as authentic (islamqa.info/14403) this is canonical Islamic doctrine, not fringe material.

The adult version of this account (Sira p. 72) links to Quran 94:1 (“Did We not expand your breast?”), suggesting this surgical intervention was ongoing. If multiple “heart-washing” procedures were required, one is compelled to ask: what kept returning that needed removing?

1.4 Identity Crisis: Is This Jibril or an Imposter?

The Quran itself provides insufficient identification of the entity:

• Quran 2:97 “Gabriel brings it down” (retroactive assignment, not contemporaneous account)
• Quran 16:102 Attributed to “Ruh al-Qudus” (Holy Spirit a different attribution entirely)
• Quran 26:193 “Ruh al-Amin” (Trustworthy Spirit yet another designation)
• Quran 53:4–5 Allah teaches via “a strong one in power” (no name given)

The hadith record adds a further complication: the same “Jibril” who allegedly appeared as a horizon-filling giant in the cave (Tabari Tafsir 30:192) also appeared as a beautiful human youth named Dihya al-Kalbi (Bukhari 1:2:4). These descriptions are irreconcilable without special pleading.

Most damaging: Sahih al-Bukhari 6:60:478 records what Islamic scholars call the “Satanic Verses” episode Satan successfully impersonated Jibril, inserting verses praising pagan goddesses al-Lat, al-Uzza, and Manat directly into Quranic revelation. The cover-up verse (Quran 22:52–53) actually confirms the episode by acknowledging that Satan “casts into” the Prophet’s recitation. This is not contested  al-Tabari, Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Sa’d, and al-Waqidi all record it. If Satan could successfully impersonate Jibril once, the entire chain of revelation is epistemically compromised.

1.5 The Fatrah Pause and Resumption (~610–613 CE)

After the initial encounter, revelation ceased. Islamic sources disagree on duration: some record 6 months; the dominant Sunni position (islamqa.info/177239) is approximately 3 years.

During the pause, Muhammad’s own reported psychological state:

“I fear I am majnun (possessed / a mad poet).”

Majnun in Arabic means literally “one taken by jinn” it denotes demon possession in the classical Arabian framework. Muhammad’s own self-assessment during the cessation of “revelation” was that he might be jinn-possessed. This is not a Western polemical imposition it is Muhammad’s own words, preserved in Islam’s most authoritative hadith collection.

When the entity returns, it calls “O Muhammad!” and squeezes him again; Muhammad sweats profusely in the Meccan heat.

The pattern is consistent: each encounter with this entity involves physical violence, psychological terror, and compulsion rather than peace, calling, and willing surrender. The resumption of “revelation” (Surah 74, al-Muddathir) is conveyed by an entity whose shape shifts across accounts.

Textual note: The manuscript tradition itself shows instability at the foundational passage. The Hafs and Warsh qira’at diverge on Quran 96:1 — Hafs reads “iqra’” (recite) while Warsh reads “iqtarib” (approach). The Sana’a palimpsest (discovered 1972, analyzed by Sadeghi and Bergmann, Der Islam 87:149, 2010; available at corpuscoranicum.de) shows variants and erasures in Surah 96 — the very passage that records the Hira encounter. What Divisive Truth Demands of You

Part 7 of 7 in the series: The Truth That Divides

We’re back on the bridge of the ship.

The convoy is still moving — same heading, same speed, same formation. It still looks peaceful. No one is arguing on the radio. No one is breaking ranks. It feels like unity.

But the lighthouse hasn’t moved.

At some point, every Christian has to decide what to call that situation. You can stay with the herd and call it unity, or you can alter course toward the light and call it obedience. One path keeps everyone comfortable until the keel shreds on unseen rock. The other slices the water alone for a while, in the dark — but it actually saves the ship.

Everything in this series has been one long answer to the question: What happens when someone really steers by the lighthouse?

In Nazareth, Jesus reads Isaiah, then applies it honestly, and His hometown tries to throw Him off a cliff. In Jerusalem, He turns over tables and words, and the most religious men in the city call Him demon-possessed, blasphemer, and law-breaker. In the council chamber, Caiaphas calculates that it is “better that one man die” than that their fragile order be disturbed. On the roads from Damascus to Ephesus, Paul preaches Christ and idol economies riot. Throughout Israel’s history, prophets tear down altars, confront kings, and wind up in cisterns, prisons, and unmarked graves. In every age since, converts leave the herd and discover that the herd does not clap.

None of these people sought division for its own sake. Jesus did not wake up in Nazareth hoping to get mobbed. Paul did not aim for riots as a ministry goal. Elijah did not relish running from Jezebel. They chose God; division came as the wake behind a hull that refused to aim at the rocks.

The Only Sword He Carries

Jesus told us plainly what He came with:

“I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” (Matt 10:34–36)

As we unpacked in earlier posts, that sword is not steel. It is the Word that divides reality as God names it: light from darkness, wheat from chaff, sheep from goats. That Word, spoken clearly into any age, will always do two things at once:

Cut away illusions, idols, and counterfeit peace.

Free those who are willing to be cut.

“You will know the truth,” He said, “and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). Freedom always begins with a turn — with a change of heading — away from what felt safe and toward what God says is true.

What This Requires of Us

If that is the pattern — Jesus, Paul, prophets, converts — then what does it demand of us? Not in theory. In practice. In your actual life.

1. Expect the Split

If you follow Jesus, you will feel the blade He warned about. Some friends will step back. Some colleagues will call you divisive. Some pastors will tell you not to “rock the boat.” Some authorities will pressure you to keep the convoy’s speed and heading.

This is not a sign you are doing Christianity wrong. It is often a sign you are finally doing it at all.

2. Refuse Counterfeit Peace

“Strive for peace with everyone” (Heb 12:14). “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all” (Rom 12:18). Those commands still stand. We do not look for a fight.

But neither do we buy peace by lying. When peace requires “forgetting” the unborn, the child’s body, the created difference of male and female, the poor crushed by policy, the persecuted church — then peace has become idolatry.

Never unite with darkness (2 Cor 6:14–18). Never call good what God calls evil (Isa 5:20).

3. Speak Plainly, Not Cruelly

The sword we carry is the Word, not our own temper.

“Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt.” (Col 4:6)

“The Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone… correcting opponents with gentleness.” (2 Tim 2:24–25)

Truth already has sharp edges. Your tone doesn’t need to add barbs. We don’t have to mimic the world’s sarcasm and contempt. We can combine clarity and calm — and still refuse to budge on what God says.

4. Build New Belonging

Conversion and obedience fracture old circles. That’s simply reality. God does not leave you alone, though. He gives you a new household:

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” (Acts 2:42)

The local church is a plausibility structure for truth — a place where the things the world calls “crazy” or “hateful” (like repentance, chastity, sacrificial giving, public confession of Christ) are simply normal obedience. Converts need this new family — because the old one may step away (1 Pet 4:3–4; 1 Cor 7:12–16).

5. Engage Public Life Without Idolatry

The sword in our mouths does not mean we abandon the tools in our hands.

Jesus says, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Mark 12:17). Paul urges, “First of all… prayers… for kings and all who are in high positions” (1 Tim 2:1–2). Micah sums up our public duty: “Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God” (Mic 6:8).

In a constitutional system, voting, speaking, organizing, running for office, contesting unjust laws — these are simply modern ways of loving your neighbor and stewarding your Eden. That is not “culture war.” That is applied discipleship.

And when the state commands what God forbids, or forbids what God commands, the apostolic answer is still:

“We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)

We do not obey that verse with violence; we obey it with courage and willingness to suffer.

The Choice

So at the end we are back where we started.

Stay in formation and bless whatever the convoy calls “unity” — or — alter course to the lighthouse, even if the herd jeers, and call it obedience.

This entire series has been written to say one thing: the cost of that turn is not proof that you failed. It is proof that the sword from His mouth is still sharp.

The church’s task is not to blunt the blade in the name of “unity,” but to wield it faithfully — in preaching, in discipleship, and yes, in public life — accepting the social costs as the normal price of following a crucified and risen Lord.

Unity that ignores or blurs the gospel is not unity; it is treason. Peace without righteousness is drywall over rot. Love that refuses to confront destructive lies about God, about man, about children, about justice — is not love at all.

And condolences that pivot into a leash — “We grieve, but don’t be like him” — are not pastoral care. They are the council’s logic in church clothes: better that one man’s example die, so the rest of us can keep our comfortable formation.

A Word to the Young Christians Reading This

This series began because of what was written to you — over your heads, about a man who was killed for doing what you’re being told not to do.

You were told his public courage was “culture war.” You were told his way of linking Scripture to law, family, and national life was dangerous. You were shown loaded images and emotional pivots designed to make you associate boldness with villainy.

Don’t buy it.

Read the prophets. Read Acts. Read what happened to every man and woman in Scripture who dared to say what God said — out loud, in public, with consequences.

Then decide for yourself whether the problem is the lighthouse or the convoy’s heading.

Jesus went first. Paul followed. The prophets bled. The Fathers taught the same thing under Roman swords. A man named Charlie tried, in his own fallible way, to walk that same road — and died for it.

Before you let anyone rebuke that courage as “culture war,” ask whether they are rebuking the very thing Scripture calls faithfulness.

The lighthouse has not moved. The only question is whether you will steer by it.

The Modern Smear Answered — With Scripture, Sociology, and the Early Church

Part 6 of 7 in the series: The Truth That Divides

We’ve spent five posts tracing a single thread: Christian truth, spoken plainly, divides. It divided Nazareth. It divided the Sanhedrin. It divided Ephesus. It divided Israel for centuries before Jesus arrived. And it still divides today.

But there’s a particular accusation that floats around modern discourse like a fog, and we need to walk straight into it:

“By today’s standards, wouldn’t Jesus and Paul be labeled extremists — even ‘fascists’?”

In one sense, yes: they already were called the ancient equivalents. In another sense, the label is so historically illiterate it would be funny if it weren’t so effective at silencing Christians. Let’s take it apart.

The Ancient Labels

Jesus is accused of:

Being demon-possessed (Mark 3:22; John 10:20). Being insane (Mark 3:21). Subverting the nation and forbidding taxes (Luke 23:2). Blasphemy for making Himself equal with God (John 10:33; Mark 14:64).

Paul is accused of:

Being a “pest,” a public menace (Acts 24:5). Being a ringleader of a dangerous sect (Acts 24:5). Stirring up riots and turning the world upside down (Acts 17:6).

So yes — the labels “dangerous,” “subversive,” “hateful,” “blasphemous” are not new. Today’s terms (“fascist,” “Nazi,” “far-right religious extremist”) are just new paint on the same wall.

But the substance doesn’t fit.

Why the Label Is a Category Error

Jesus refuses to advance His cause by physical force: “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were, my servants would have been fighting” (John 18:36). He stops His disciple’s sword and heals His enemy (Matt 26:52–53; Luke 22:51). He commands love for enemies and prayer for persecutors (Matt 5:44).

Paul demolishes ethnic supremacy: “There is neither Jew nor Greek… for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal 3:28; Eph 2:14–18). The gospel is not the banner of one tribe; it is the judge of all tribes.

Neither man seizes the state. Both live under unjust states and submit to their penalties rather than lie about the truth (Rom 13:1–7; Acts 25:11). Jesus goes to the cross; Paul goes to the sword.

The Nazis exalted race, state, and violence as ultimate. The apostolic gospel undercuts all three:

Race: All have sinned; all need grace; no group has a better cross (Rom 3:9–23).

State: Government is God’s servant, not God (Rom 13:1–7).

Violence: Christians are called to suffer, not to crucify, for their Lord (2 Tim 3:12; 1 Pet 2:21–23).

Even the charges at their trials underline the difference. Jesus is crucified under the title “King of the Jews,” framed as a political pretender — yet He refuses armed defense and declares His kingdom “not of this world” (John 18:36). Paul asserts his rights as a Roman citizen, reasons calmly before governors and kings, and then accepts execution rather than adjust the message (Acts 22–26).

They were called names. The names were not accurate. They were crucified and beheaded not because they were tyrants, but because they unmasked tyrannies of the heart — and hearts that idolize stability will always call that “extremism.”

The Sociological Mechanics — Why Groups React This Way

Without making sociology the new Bible, a few frameworks help explain the how behind the pattern we’ve been tracing.

Boundary maintenance (Durkheim). Communities preserve identity by policing moral and doctrinal boundaries. When Christians publicly enforce biblical boundaries on sexuality, idolatry, or justice — it feels “divisive” to those who want those boundaries erased.

Plausibility structures (Berger). Beliefs feel plausible when surrounded by people and institutions that support them. A Christian saying, “Abortion is murder,” or “Men and women are not interchangeable,” in a context that assumes the opposite, sounds insane — not because the claim is weaker, but because the structure is hostile.

Cognitive dissonance (Festinger). When truth claims pierce identity, people experience inner conflict and often relieve it by attacking the messenger rather than examining the idol.

Conformity and preference falsification (Asch; Kuran). Many will echo whatever line is safest in public, even if privately unconvinced — especially when the cost of dissent is high. That is why a small number of loud voices can make a whole room fall silent.

Put bluntly: when Jesus or Paul speak, they are not just offering ideas; they are re-drawing the map. Those who benefit from the old map — morally, psychologically, or economically — react as if under attack.

The Lazy Syllogism

In our time, these dynamics get funneled into one lazy syllogism:

1. Jesus/Paul (or a faithful Christian) makes exclusive truth claims and moral absolutes.
2. He has influence on crowds or law.
3. Fascists also had absolutes and crowds.
4. Therefore: “You’re basically a fascist.”

It sounds clever. It is historically and theologically incoherent. We must not let fear of these labels neuter the sword of the Word. We can reject real hatred and real violence while refusing to accept that clarity equals cruelty.

What Did the Early Church Fathers Think?

The first generations after the apostles — those who bled under Rome and watched the church move from small minority to persecuted movement — had to work out in practice what we’ve been arguing in theory. How do you honor rulers without worshiping them? How do you seek peace without burying the sword of the Word? How do you love your neighbor while refusing false unity with evil?

Their answers are remarkably consistent — and they match everything we’ve seen in Scripture.

Honor the Ruler, Worship God Alone

Justin Martyr (c. 155): “We worship God alone, but in other things we gladly serve you, recognizing you as emperors… and praying that you may be found to have sound wisdom.”

Theophilus of Antioch (c. 180): “I honor the emperor, not worshipping him, but praying for him… for it is not lawful to worship any other than God alone.”

Tertullian (c. 197): “Without ceasing, for all the emperors, we offer prayer… for long life, for secure dominion, for brave armies, for a faithful senate, for a righteous people, for a quiet world.”

Origen (c. 248): “We help kings… by offering prayers to God on their behalf, more effectively than soldiers who go out to fight for them.”

The earliest Christians modeled exactly what we are defending: loyal, engaged public presence without worship of the regime. That stance is inherently “divisive,” because it draws a line between state and God. Service, yes; worship, never.

Truth Divides — and Persecution Follows

Tertullian (c. 197): “The blood of Christians is seed.” Persecution is predictable when truth confronts idols — and God uses that shedding of blood to plant new believers.

Clement of Rome (c. 96): “Through jealousy and envy the greatest and most righteous pillars [Peter and Paul] were persecuted and contended unto death.” The earliest post-New-Testament writing remembers their deaths as the normal price of fidelity.

Polycarp of Smyrna (c. 155): “Eighty-six years have I served Him, and He has done me no wrong; how can I blaspheme my King and Savior?” An old man’s quiet “no” separates him from the crowd — and costs him his life.

John Chrysostom (c. 390): “This more than anything is peace, when the diseased part is cut off… For concord is not in every case a good thing.” Real peace sometimes requires division — like surgery.

Unity — But Only in Truth

Ignatius of Antioch (c. 110): “If anyone follows a maker of schism, he shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” The real schismatics are those who fracture doctrine — not those who defend it.

Irenaeus of Lyon (c. 180): “Error is never set forth naked… but, decked out in an attractive dress, makes it appear to the inexperienced more true than the truth.” Error always masquerades. Truth must draw lines.

Athanasius of Alexandria (c. 357): “The sentiment of truth must not be hidden, nor must it be suppressed, but must have high utterance.” When heresy says, “Let’s not divide the church over this,” Athanasius answers: truth first, even if it means exile.

Augustine of Hippo (c. 426): “The peace of all things is the tranquillity of order.” Peace has a shape: rightly ordered loves under God. Any “peace” that denies God’s order is counterfeit.

No Coercion — Truth Persuades, Conscience Is Won, Not Crushed

Lactantius (c. 313): “Religion cannot be imposed by force; the matter must be carried on by words, not by blows.” And: “Religion is to be defended, not by killing but by dying.”

Here is a Christian writing at the threshold of Constantine, explicitly rejecting forced faith. True religion persuades; it does not coerce. The martyrs’ blood is their argument. That is the exact opposite of the “Christian fascist” caricature.

Two “Bridge” Combinations Worth Remembering

For quick use in any conversation or debate:

Justin + Theophilus: Serve rulers, worship God alone. Together they show that Christians should be loyal, law-abiding, prayerful citizens — but their worship and ultimate allegiance are fixed on God, not the state.

Chrysostom + Lactantius: Truth cuts to heal; faith is not forced. Chrysostom reminds us that the “sword” of Christ is a healing cut, not sadistic violence. Lactantius insists that we defend the faith by dying, not killing. Put together, they expose the lie that strong Christian conviction is tyranny.

One Summary Sentence

From the apostles onward, the Fathers teach that Christian love tells the truth, honors rulers without worshiping them, refuses false peace with evil, expects persecution rather than inflicts it, and seeks unity only in the truth — so of course the gospel “divides,” just as a surgeon’s blade does: in order to heal.

The church is not called to be liked. It is called to be faithful. And faithfulness, as we have seen from Gideon to Jeremiah, from Jesus to Paul, from the martyrs to the Fathers, will always look “divisive” to those who have built their peace on sand.

When “Love” and “Unity” Become Tools of Control

Part 5 of 7 in the series: The Truth That Divides

Over the last three posts, we walked through five scenes — from Nazareth to Rome, from Gideon to Paul — and the pattern was always the same: truth spoken plainly into any setting splits the room. Not because the speaker is reckless, but because reality has edges.

Now we face the objection that always comes next: “But what about unity? What about love? Doesn’t the Bible command peace?”

Yes. It does. And that’s exactly why we need to talk about what happens when those words get hollowed out and turned into weapons.

Unity With Whom, and Around What?

Go back to the convoy.

If “unity” means “keep everyone on the same heading, even if the chart says we’re aimed at rocks,” that’s not biblical unity. That’s mutiny against the Captain.

The New Testament is very explicit about the kind of unity Jesus wants — and the limits of unity.

What Jesus prayed for:

“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth… that they may all be one.” (John 17:17–23)

Unity comes after truth has cut and cleansed. No truth, no real unity.

What Paul required:

“Until we all attain to the unity of the faith… speaking the truth in love.” (Eph 4:13–15)

Unity grows by telling the truth in love, not by gagging it.

What Scripture forbids:

“Do not be unequally yoked… what fellowship has light with darkness?… Therefore go out from their midst.” (2 Cor 6:14–18)

“Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” (Eph 5:11)

If “unity” demands that we bless what God condemns — the shedding of innocent blood (Prov 6:16–17; 24:11–12), the unmaking of the family (1 Tim 5:8; Deut 6:6–9; Eph 6:4), unjust laws that crush the weak (Isa 10:1–2) — then “unity” is just a polite word for rebellion. It is the council saying, “Better that one man die, so we can keep our nation intact.”

Biblical peace is real, but it is never free-floating emotion. “Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other“ (Ps 85:10). Peace without righteousness is drywall over rot. Unity without truth is just synchronized walking toward a cliff.

Two Voices, One Pattern: How Emotional Stories Blame the Victim

If you read Arjen ten Brinke’s posts and Jan Wolsheimer’s article side by side, you don’t just see two individuals grieving. You see a pattern — a way of talking that, whether they intend it or not, emotionally manipulates the reader into thinking that the real problem is not the man who pulled the trigger, but the kind of Christian Charlie Kirk was.

The structure goes like this.

Step One: “We’re so sad” — the warm layer of sympathy

Both start in the same place. “His death is a terrible tragedy.” “We feel for his family.” Arjen adds that Charlie helped his own son stand for his faith. This is the soft blanket of empathy. And to be clear: there is nothing wrong with that. It’s right to name the horror and to weep with those who weep.

But watch what happens next.

Step Two: The “holy but” — the pivot away from the blood

Very quickly, the tone shifts. “His death is terrible, but…” “We grieve, but we must also talk about the dangers of faith mixed with politics.” “He gave youth courage, but he became a symbol of culture war.”

That “but” is doing a shocking amount of work. It moves the focus away from the warm blood on the ground of a brother in Christ and onto a different question:

Not: What ideology shoots a man for speaking Christian convictions in public? But: Wasn’t his kind of Christianity dangerous anyway?

Without ever saying, “He deserved it,” the narrative leans toward: “This is what happens when you are that sort of Christian.” It is the oldest moral reflex in the world: something terrible happens, and people ask not, “What was done to him?” but, “What did he do to bring this on himself?”

It is hard to imagine a more effective way to discourage courage in the next generation.

Step Three: Deploy emotional trigger words

Once that pivot is made, the next move is to load the scene with high-voltage images. Children torn away from their parents at the border. “America First” as if it were a simple synonym for moral corruption. A Bible photo-op after a protest crackdown.

The point is not to carefully analyze those events — he doesn’t. The point is to create an emotional association: “This is the world Charlie stood close to. Do you still feel as sympathetic now?”

The “children torn from parents” line is especially potent. It condenses a complex and tragic policy debate into a single, weaponized image: a sobbing child, a heartless state, and by implication, any Christian who voted for law and order standing there and nodding.

There is truth buried in the picture — real failures and injustices did occur. But the way it is used here is not careful ethics; it is political theater with a cross pinned on top. It tells you, without ever arguing it, that wanting strong borders equals being okay with child abuse, and supporting the only candidate who promises to protect your children from gender chaos, abortion extremism, and anarchic streets equals siding with villains who “tear families apart.”

Now place that image back onto Charlie’s coffin. The unspoken message lands: “Yes, his murder is awful… but remember, he chose to stand with those people.”

That is not love. That is emotional blackmail dressed as compassion.

Step Four: Redefine the lesson — beware Christians like him

By the end of both pieces, the takeaway for readers — especially for young Christians — is very clear: Don’t be too public with your convictions. Don’t get too close to any concrete political choice. Don’t be the kind of Christian who links the Bible to immigration, law, family, or national life.

In other words: Do not live like the man who just died for doing exactly that.

The articles never say, “He had it coming.” They don’t need to. The structure does it for them. They invert the meaning of his death: instead of being a warning about what happens when the world hates the truth (John 15:18–20), it becomes a warning about what happens when Christians are “too clear” and “too involved.”

Even if Arjen and Jan sincerely mean well, the effect is the same: their words teach the flock to suspect the victim and to fear the courage that Scripture actually commands.

The False Love Checklist

Not every appeal to love or unity is fake. Scripture commands us to love our enemies, forgive, and seek peace. But those same words can also be hollowed out and used to shut down obedience.

Here are warning signs that “love” is being weaponized, not practiced:

Love that only ever punches one way. If “love” is mainly used to rebuke outspoken Christians, but almost never to confront the ideologies and movements that kill Christians, corrupt children, destroy the family, or legalize injustice — something is off. Real love confronts wolves as well as clumsy sheep.

Unity that always drifts toward the spirit of the age. If “unity” in practice always means, “Move closer to secular progressive positions,” and never, “Call the culture to repentance,” it isn’t biblical unity; it’s theological peer pressure.

Peace that mutes Scripture. When calls for “peace,” “healing,” or “reconciliation” are consistently paired with, “Let’s not quote those verses,” or, “Let’s not apply that doctrine publicly, it’s too polarizing” — you’re not being shepherded; you’re being asked to sheath the sword of the Word (Heb 4:12).

Condolences with a leash. When a Christian is killed, fired, or ruined for speaking truth, and the first response is, “This is terrible… but we must also talk about how unwise and polarizing his approach was” — that’s not love. That’s social control wrapped in sympathy. The subtext is: Don’t be like him.

Real Christian love “rejoices with the truth” (1 Cor 13:6). It doesn’t use the word “love” to protect idols from being named or to shame believers who dare to say out loud what God has already said in His Word.

When “Love” Is Just My Own Reflection

There is another layer we need to name, because it explains why some Christians talk the way Arjen and Jan do.

Sometimes, when you live too much in left-brain mode — all analysis, endless nuance, hanging on your own interpretations of events — you can end up moving in tight, closed circles. You are constantly refining your picture of what “real Christian love” is supposed to look like. You adjust and polish and correct, until the standard of love in your mind no longer comes from Scripture or from the historic church, but from a mental model you built yourself.

At that point, the word love stops being a gift you receive and a command you obey; it becomes a tool you use.

Any practice you do not understand? “Unloving.” Any tone you do not prefer? “Unloving.” Any Christian who won’t adopt your posture of quietism and detachment? “Unloving,” “divisive,” “dangerous.”

The path runs like this:

“I love Jesus” → “I define love like this” → “Everyone who does not act like this is unloving” → “Unloving people are dangerous” → “Dangerous people are basically… fascists, Nazis, culture warriors.”

It is all done with soft words, with sighs, with references to the Sermon on the Mount and the gospel of peace — but the functional outcome is brutal: any Christian who refuses your model of quiet, apolitical, conflict-averse faith ends up morally grouped with the worst villains of history.

This is how “love” becomes a club: not a standard we all kneel under together, but a weapon you swing at brothers who will not imitate your temperament or your political instincts.

Instead of, “Does this align with the Word of God?”, the question becomes, “Does this align with my idea of love?” When the answer is no, the person is not just wrong; they are, by transitive property, a “hater,” a “radical,” a “Nazi.” Once they are in that bucket, you no longer have to learn from them. You no longer have to grapple with the uncomfortable possibility that their courage exposes your passivity.

Real love “rejoices with the truth” (1 Cor 13:6). It doesn’t erase brothers because they fight battles you would rather avoid. When we baptize our comfort and call it love, we are not protecting the gospel; we are protecting ourselves — from the cost of obedience.
